70

Interstate 70

This major east-west interstate passes just north of the Dayton Metro area.

EXIT 2

35 EAST

Eaton

Merge/split If you're eastbound, US 35 enters Ohio multiplexed with I-70. This is the exit where it strikes off on its own, heading southeast toward Eaton as a simple two-laned road.

Diamond The ramp structure on the west side of this interchange was dictated by a railroad overpass that used to closely parallel OH 513. The railroad line has long since been abandoned, and the overpass demolished sometime in the 1990's.

EXIT 29

Modified Diamond Short merge ramp back onto eastbound 70. This seems to be normal on this particular stretch of highway.
EXIT 32

Dayton International Airport

Trumpet

Unsigned freeway between I-70 and Dayton International. There is a single diamond interchange with US 40 before the airport grounds are entered and the freeway ends.

There is a desparate need for auxilliary lanes between this exit and I-75

EXIT 33A

75 SOUTH

Dayton

Cloverleaf

This exit is not only grossly underdesigned for the traffic load it is asked to handle, it is a deathtrap for anyone attempting to use it. ODOT is currently in the middle of a five-year long project to upgrade this exit to a Flyover/3, with auxilliary lanes to both Airport Access Road and OH 202.

EXIT 36

202

Huber Heights

Folded Diamond

Another exit woefully underdesigned for the traffic load it is asked to handle. A major truck stop shares this exit with three strip malls and numerous professional office buildings. Even though all the ramps are located east of SR 202, enough vacant land exists west of the interchange to allow a modification to at least a six-ramp configuration. It appears that ODOT has realized this, for as of mid-2005 they are rebuilding this interchange into a more conventional diamond using this previously-vacant land.

Moving the truck stop to the next exit east wouldn't hurt, either.

EXIT 38

201

Brandt Pike

Diamond Entrance/exit ramps are rather shorter than the normal standard, but the problems with this interchange are just beginning. The bridge only allows for two through lanes on OH 201. This wouldn't be a problem except that 201 is five lanes either side of the interchange. Can you say, "traffic jam?"

EXIT 41B

New Carlisle

Modified Flyover/1 with C/D

Westbound I-70 traffic uses one exit ramp to take either SR4 south or SR 235 north. The SR4 ramp becomes the left lane of southbound SR4. Collector/distributor ramp system for eastbound I-70, partial C/D for westbound (collecting all traffic wanting to take westbound 70 and providing a single merge).

It is at this point, in the middle of farmland, that I-70 finally widens to six lanes. Ostensibly, this is because it is co-signed with OH 4 at this point.

An oddity for westbound I-70 traffic is the presence of an unsigned merge ramp 0.5 miles east of the main interchange. I-70's right of way severely disrupted the alignment of Upper Valley Road when originally built, and this ramp is the only way traffic southbound on Upper Valley can reach SR 4

EXIT 48
